A few Thrifty Thursdays ago, I showed you how to create a beautiful garden in any space, big or small! This week, I’m sharing the progress of my own garden, as well as some tricks to get the most out of your produce this season!
Harvest season is right around the corner, and truthfully, it is my favourite time of year. With a large supply of tomatoes, beans and cucumbers, I’m ready to start my canning endeavors in the weeks to come!
First off, here is a little update of what my garden looks like now:
And the first batch of goodies!
Finally, some fun tricks to try with your garden next season!
Did you know you can recycle your store bought veggies in the form of replanting?!
– Simply place the ends of your used romaine lettuce into a cup of water for about a week; it should sprout this much:
Plant your sprouts and water them. Within two weeks you’ll have a new heart of lettuce!
You can also try this with celery, ginger, chickpeas and garlic.
Keep the insects from eating your plants by using black pepper or cinnamon. My biggest obstacle last year was fire ants: they eat the roots of your plants and kill them out of your plain view. Simply take a palm full of pepper and/or cinnamon and sprinkle it around the base of the plant.
You can also kill weeds surrounding your garden with a mixture of vinegar and salt; or you can try vinegar and baking soda! Oh the many uses of vinegar…
Finally, for my Walking Dead and Gardening fans:
