It’s that time of year: you’re enjoying a beautiful night by the fire or getting some gardening done while getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.
Although there is an entire market of conventional items for sale to decrease your chances of being bitten, maybe this year you should give DIY a try! With a little creativity we will have your outdoor skincare routine covered in no time.
One of the most effective ways to keep mosquitoes away from your immediate surroundings this season is to invest in some mosquito repelling candles. Better yet, make them yourself! I came across this brilliantly simple recipe on PinsandProcrastination.com that requires just a few ingredients:
- Candle wax
- Citronella oil
- Glass jars

Citronella has been used for thousands of years as a natural repellent for insects. In addition to using citronella in candles, it can also be used in citronella torches which creates a large surface area of repellent. Citronella essential oils are completely safe for horses and dogs, but do not place directly around felines as they are allergic to many essential oils.
Citronella plants can also be planted in your garden or planter pots throughout your backyard for easy and effortless repellent all year long!
Finally, when you just can’t keep the bugs away, a DIY mosquito repellent will do the trick, and last! My favourite is a combination of essential oils that don’t leave you choking on fumes and actually keep the mosquitoes away. Here are the ingredients, and don’t miss the original post by Wellness Mama here:
- Essential oils of your choice, i.e. citronella, lemongrass, lavender or tea tree
- Natural witch hazel
- Distilled water or boiled water

Now you can enjoy all of your outdoor activities free from bites! Happy summer, Snobs.
