Keeping in theme with spring and renewal, this week’s Thrifty Thursday will be devoted to spring cleaning. I know; it’s not very exciting but it needs to be done.
Lucky for you I’ve developed a cleaning supply compilation that will cleanse your home while keeping it green and healthy!
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps:
The holy grail of cleaning, everything. This includes laundry, floors, hair, skin, your dog, you name it. Take a look at their site to see their products’ 18-in-1 uses; just amazing!
How is this product green? For starters, the soap is organic, vegan, castile soap supporting fair trade by using sustainable ingredients. That’s quite the mouthful but it’s the truth. It’s safe for virtually every surface and use, and couldn’t be any better for your family.
For tougher grime and build up, use vinegar. I’ve posted about the surprisingly effective uses for vinegar here, so check it out! This is great for stoves, toilets, sinks, bathtubs, and your dishwasher. Also, while you’re at it, give your washing machine a good cleaning! In hard water areas, washing machines should be cleaned once a month to get rid of calcium/lime build up and dirt. Simply take 2 cups of vinegar and add to super load of hot water and let sit for an hour with the lid closed. When the hour is up, run the washing machine; viola!
Another neat trick is to take a mason jar filled with vinegar, and add four oranges worth of peels to the jar. Let the mixture sit for a few weeks and you’ll have a wonderfully smelling, completely natural, potent cleaning solution.
Why is this green? Essentially no harsh chemicals. Vinegar, as well as oranges, are acids which cut grease and build-up; there is no need for chemicals!
Use hydrogen peroxide as a deodorizer and disinfectant. %3 HP concentration has the ability to completely rid surfaces and fabrics of any odour, including animal messes. You can pour directly on the problem area and allow to dry (do a spot test first, of course.) Because of it’s disinfecting properties, it will not mould if left wet for too long. Also, use it in your very own homemade Febreeze!
It is also a great alternative to bleach; although bleach cleans great, it can be overpowering and cause headaches. It’s safe to use in white loads of laundry and for your dishes!
Is it green? Of course! Hydrogen Peroxide is an all natural compound and is so mild that it has extremely versatile uses.
Last, but definitely not least! Baking soda is great because of it’s abrasive, but gentle, property. Baking soda is a must for cleaning grout, tough grease build-up on the stove and oven, and even acts as a deodorizer.
It’s green? Most definitely. You can even use it on your teeth, so of course it’s safe! Combined with hydrogen peroxide or vinegar, baking soda acts as an even stronger cleaning agent and still maintains it’s green status.
